Mini Melvin online

HeyHeyHey recently developed a travel version of the legendary Melvin the Mixed Media Machine. This spectacular Rube Goldberg, with Twitter and Facebook account, already charmed some 14000 people at MU during the Dutch Design Week 2010 and then, registered on film, became an outright internet hit with 80000 fans. Melvin the Mini Machine is another Rube Goldberg, which consists of two old trunks jam-packed with various objects. All these objects work together to reach the same goal: the signing and preparing of a picture postcard for the mail.

Mini Melvin is presented to public at MU goes Milan and premiered online on wednesday April 18.

Make a Forest at Strijp-S

The United Nations proclaimed 2011 as the international year of the Forest. This inspired cultural entrepreneurs Anne van der Zwaag and Joanna van der Zanden to initiate the project Make a Forest. The project is based on the idea that besides their cultural, natural and symbolic value, forests have been an inspiration to artists and designers since decades. Make a Forest uses their imagination to raise awareness about sustainable forestry. The project has been taken up by several initiatives around the globe.

During the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven the Wild-S pavilion is transformed into the Make a Forest headquarters. MU has put together a special program and asked designers and artists to create and present artificial trees for the temporary forest at Strijp-S.

The following works will be shown:
Temporary Trees by Raw Color en GKMK
Bosbus 2.0 by Ton Matton (Matton Office)
Tree Track by Christien Meindertsma (commissioned by InnovatieNetwerk)
City Tree by Helmut Smits
Rubbertree by type-b (Marc ter Horst)
Tree One Minutes by theoneminutes.org

Sunday October 23 the Make a Forest project will be officially opened. Between 2 and 4 pm different lecturers will share their specific knowledge with you. Participating designers will also be present and talk about their fascination for trees. A selection of Tree One Minutes will be shown.

This project is sponsored by: Strijp-S Cultuurfonds, Brainport Eindhoven, Willy de Kruyff Touringcars and Trudo

Wild-S Forest

Add a temporary artificial tree to the Wild-S forest.

Wild-S is a temporary forest with its own pavillion, built by MU in collaboration with the Rotterdam-based artist collective Observatorium during the summer and fall of 2011.

Wild-S is a place to play and to be. You don’t need to do anything there, but almost everything is allowed. The United Nations haven’t declared 2011 the Year of the Forest for nothing. Wild-S is is mixed forest, filled with natural and artificial trees. Both in as many sorts and sizes as possible. The natural trees have been growing through this summer. The artificial trees will be added to the forest in the course of October. A tree of cabinets, a tyre tree, a PETbottle tree, a knitted tree, a bucket tree: anything you think of can be turned into a tree.

So that is what we’ll do. And everybody is invited to participate during one of the many workshop-Sunday-afternoons that will be organised by our forester Albert van Abbe.

MU presents: 'Values' @ Trajector Art Fair

April 30 & May 1, 2011

MU presents 'Values' a solo presentation by Jasper van Es at the Trajector Art Fair in Brussels.

Art and the artworld evolve around values. In all senses of the word: esthetic, ethic and financial. Jasper van Es likes to take this as a starting point for his project Values, in which money and the way it is used in the artworld is examined on another level.

Jaspers relationship with money is one of turbulence. On a personal level his objective is to live comfortably, but he doesn't want to sell his soul as an artist. With this in mind, Jasper started examining how the value of money can be artistically attributed or diminished. The result is three ongoing projects: 1.Maecenas, 2. An Artists Privilege and 3. An Artists Touch. All three deal with actual money becoming art objects, by becoming more or less valuable, but always collectable.

With a sharp eye for the activist and multidisciplinary practices, the platform for visual culture, MU likes to promote young artists and giving them support to produce new works. Jasper's promise as an artist has now led him to Brussels, another great step for him in his first year working professionally. His Values project has also slipped in perfectly for the Neuconomics theme of this Trajector Art Fair.

MU&more program March, April & May

Harlan Levey talks Moussism

Thursday 24 March
Starting at 8pm, entrance is free.
Location: The studio in the Van Abbe Museum

In the studio of Van Abbe Museum the American curator and writer Harlan Levey will tell us all about the Moussism. Soon a book of his will be published with the same title. In that book he will make a connection between formerly unaccepted movements in modern art, that nowadays are fully acknowledgeden art of now that is not always recognised as art. All of this with the rebellious motto: Mousse art looks like shit but tastes sweet.

Levey lives and works since a couple of years in Brussels, Belgium, as the editor in chief of Modart Magazine, and the driving force behind the No New enemies network. He specializes in Media Aesthetics, Action Based Practice, and is an expert in the area of Mousse Art.

MOUSSISM = a non-traditional community based movement, which is not limited to a period, place or classical notion of aesthetics, discipline, medium, ideology or style. In terms of art, it is a movement that presents work, which migrates in the viewer’s mind from shit to THE shit.

Psychedelic treats
Thursday 7 april
Startin 8pm, entrance is free.

The day before the opening of The New Psychedelica exhibition we are giving a little preview, but we also like the audience to a literally psychedelic pre-taste. In stead of the regular snacks we are offering some psychedelic treats. Two chefs will experiment with different kinds of ingrediënts. Some will make you hallucinate lightly, others will give you a relaxed feeling, but all the treats will be a sensation for the senses. The best ones will be selected to be served during the New Psychedelica afterparty at Stroomhuis on friday.

Submarine Channel presents: Psychedelic clips
Thursday 21 april
Starting 8pm, entrance free

That MU and Submarine Channel more often share the same fascinations was already obvious in their collaboration to make the exhibition Forget the Film, Watch the Titles. But also when it comes to The New Psychedelica they share an interest. Like MU recognizes a new wave in psychedelic art, Submarine sees a hausse in psychedelic music clips. After making a first psychdelic program for IDFA, they now make a new mindblowing selection for MU.

BYOB, Bring Your Own Beamer is an 'open-source' one-nightexhibition, invented by the Dutch media-artist and Neenstar Rafaël Rozendaal. For a BYOB evening artists are invited to bring their own “beamers” to explore the medium of projection. After the first BYOB took place in Berlin last year, the concept turns out to be a big hit and there have been lots of BYOB-evenings in many cities in Europe and the USA. MU hosts one of the first ones in the Netherlands. Do you want to participate? Mail us at muandmore@mu.nl

MU&more agenda

Thursday, February 10
From 20:00

Digital Arts platform and festival Playgrounds, mixed media film producer Postal Panic and the componist Bram Meindersma, all like to work with Fons Schiedon. And Fons with them. Why and how? They will tell you this evening. And of course they will show a lot of examples.

Thursday, February 24
From 20:00
HeyNiek presents EFFE, Eindhoven Fashion Film Experiment, where we take a closer look on the influence of experimental videoart and fashion films.. Especially in music videos and Hollywood movies, these influences are clearly present. The creators were inspired by what is happening in the progressive fashionworld.
On a catwalk-like way we surprise the audience with the visual violence of video clips, fashion films and experimental video and we show how these films overlap.

Thursday, March 3
From 20:00
The Great Abnerio, the alter-ego of artist Abner Preis, is the "strong man" in his own traveling circus. In it he tells about his adventures as a superhero, as a fighter pilot in the Iranian army and the friendly Squiglies he met on a deserted island and took with him on a self-built ark. After a glorious exhibit at Basel Miami, he starts his Dutch tour at Showroom Mama in Rotterdam. And everywhere he invites the audience to crawl under his skin. The only thing you need is a mustache and your imagination.

Thursday, March 10
From 20:00

UNLIKE U - Trainwriting in Berlin is not a normal Graffiti Video, in which action after action and train after train get shown, rather the Video is a sympathetic portrait of a scene which has never been shown like this before. This film writes the fascinating story of a culture, which usually aims to exist undercover, but exhibits all the characteristics of an art historical movement with all its spacial and periodic developments.

Walk & Talk Show 'Pols Hoogte' during DDW

Next to an enlightening vision on Melvin the Machine by one of it's professors, we will dig deeper into what makes cities become cultural magnets. Eindhoven has recently developed a new strategy with which it will have to become one of the top ten creative innovation regions in the world in ten years. Is that possible? And what needs to be done to achieve this? Citymarketing specialist Erik Braun, connected to the Erasmus University and elderman Joost Helms with citymarketing in his portfolio will have a discussion about this. Connecting link between these two topics is an animationmovie and short interview with MU’s new artist-in-residence Einar Baldvin form Iceland. The evening promises to be a creative one.

Lichtplein (achter de Witte Dame)
Emmasingel, Eindhoven
