icw Showroom MAMA

As part of the exhibition Highbrow, Lowbrow, Nobrow – MOUSSE!, Showroom Mama presents 2 talks with photographer Zoe Strauss and curator Harlan Levey. On April 7 the will be at MU in Eindhoven and on April 9 in Enschede.

Zoe will talk about her I-95 project. In 1995, she started the Philadelphia Public Art Project, a one-woman organization whose mission is to give the citizens of Philadelphia access to art in their everyday lives. Strauss’s photographic work culminates in a yearly “Under I-95” show, which takes place beneath the Interstate highway in South Philadelphia. She displays her photographs on concrete pillars under the highway and sells photocopied prints of her work for $5 each. Strauss now calls the Philadelphia Public Art Project an “epic narrative” of her own neighborhood. “When I started shooting, it was as if somewhere hidden in my head I had been waiting for this,” she says.

Workshop | Robotics & More

MU and IMPAKT WORKS present:

Robotics + digital fabrication, an introduction
a workshop with Varvara Guljajeva and Mar Canet Sola

March 22nd and 23rd

MU and Impakt are joining forces for a collaborative workshop. This two day class is an introduction to robotics and digital fabrication, hosted by MU resident artist duo Varvara Guljajeva and Mar Canet Sola. Amongst the used techniques are Arduino and laser cutting, in order to create your own hybrid object.

The workshop will kick off at Impakt Headquarters (Utrecht) on Thursday  March 22, by exploring Arduino technology – an easy-to-use open source platform known for its many interactive and artistic possibilities. Starting from the the perspective of motion and behavior, Guljajeva and Canet Sola will introduce participants to different kinds of motors and encourage them to create kinetic objects.

The second day of the workshop, located at Sectie-C (Eindhoven), is dedicated to laser cutting and how this technique could be applied in robotic art. During this session, the participants are able to take their kinetic objects to the next level and digitally fabricate actual bodyparts for their moving feature.

To apply, send a message to muandmore@mu.nl – including your name, phonenumber and a short bio (student/working as...). Be quick as places are limited!

Gabriel Shalom - Hypercubism

Gabriel Shalom - Hypercubism

!! Cancelled due to illness. We hope to be able to announce a new date soon.

Master class in Digital Aesthetics

Friday February 24
From 12.30 to 3.30 pm
Location: MU and TAC
Language: English

The Tosso Variations, the current exhibition at MU, is Gabriel Shalom’s first solo show. To elaborate on his way of working and thinking he’ll be in Eindhoven on friday February 24 and invites you to participate in his master class:

“Every video is in 3D already. Length, width and time: three dimensions. Until we get fully four dimensional holographic imagery, we're going to have images which strive to be in four dimensions but always collapse back down into a flattened simulation. Hypercubism is a way of understanding the aesthetics of this collapse.

We will explore influences on Cubism in order to discover parallels in our current media environment that have had an impact on Hypercubism. We will discuss the role object-oriented interfaces have in changing our perception of moving images (video games, operating systems, computer code). We will discuss what constitutes a truly contemporary moving image – what sets it apart from the postmodern – and also what makes it more than ever before closely related to a piece of music. The master class will be a mixture of presentation, seminar discussion and group critique.”

To prepare for the master class, participants are encouraged to view the Hypercubist Manifesto. Participants are welcome to bring in short videos (5 min. or less), which they feel exhibit Hypercubist aesthetics and that they would like to analyze with the group (links to web videos are preferred).

To participate in the master class please send us an e-mail. There is a maximum of 12 participants, so sign up now.

During this MU&More the results of the After the Bit Rush workshop will be presented. Together with Unfold and Lucas Maassen designers and artists can participate in this one day workshop that is being organized by Baltan Laboratories in their Tools Series.

With the Tools Series Baltan examines the complex and changing relationships artists and designers have with the technologies and tools they develop, modify or use to create, with an aim to explore social awareness around the tool choices they make as well as the (aesthetic) influences of these choices on the work they create.

If you want to particpate in the workshop please check baltanloboratories.org
