Mapping the New News & After Photography

Workshops by Rogier Klomp X ACED & Donghwan Kam

Rogier Klomp X ACED and Donghwan Kam are both exhibiting their work during the exhibition The New Newsroom. On 18 October, they will individually give a workshop linked to their works. You can either attend one of the workshops, or both.

Workshop 1: After Photography by Donghwan Kam
The workshop by Donghwan Kam is linked to his work After Photography, that is part of the exhibition The New Newsroom. In After Photography, Donghwan Kam renders iconic news images in 3D and then walks around with his VR headset and a hacked digital camera to take his own photos of the scene. Thereby, he breaks through the numbness of yet another picture of human suffering to create a personal relationship with the events.

The workshop will be in two parts. The first part is a presentation describing the project. Kam will talk about the background in which he started the project and the points of significance in the process. In the second part of the workshop, you will actually experience virtual journalism. You will access in two different borders that are depicted in Virtual Reality. The first place is the border between Turkey and Syria, and the second place is the Trapani port of Sicily, where refugees arrive by boat. You will be taking pictures in the virtual space. After shooting, you can edit the photos you have taken, upload them to your SNS, or save them on a USB sticks.

If you want to take your edited pictures home, bring a USB stick.

Workshop 2: Mapping the New News door Rogier Klomp X ACED
In this workshop, we will try to map the influence of digital technologies on journalism. Inspired by the exhibition The New Newsroom we will explore how new technologies create opportunities for new stories and change the way we consume news. What happens, for example, when algoritms write the news? And while our filter bubbles seem to increase our biases, maybe VR will help us to re-empathise with the other?

The workshop is a visual debate in which we discuss and speculate on topics like: citizen journalism, fake news factories, Instagram attention span. In the workshop we will work on an insightfull map (brain wave) on the subject.

In his work, Klomp X ACED explores new forms of storytelling, in which he combines design and journalism. In the workshop he will share his research on the societal implications of data-driven technologies and guide you through this visual thought experiment.
