PENCIL VS PIXEL
The classroom of the future
At the invitation of SCHOOL AROUND, KNOL design studio is conducting an experiment about the future of the learning environment. During two months, 24 SintLucas students will be learning in settings ranging from 100% analogue to 100% virtual.
In KNOL’s experimental classroom MU visitors can also experience the different educational settings of Pencil vs Pixel.
The aim of Pencil vs Pixel is to make the debate about the rapid developments in education palpable. Digitalization will bring many opportunities, but also the analogue, tangible, tactile environment will continue to be important for education.
In a series of four phases, students from Media Design test potential classrooms of the future. In a few weeks time, the space transforms from an extremely physical manner of learning, into an environment in which education is totally virtual. Reactions and experiences are examined and documented. The students perform 'conditional design' assignments, interacting consistently with the available analogue / virtual tools and environment.
Each phase of Pencil vs Pixel provokes reflection on the role of technology in education, the relationship between physicality / virtuality and the body, and on the interaction between environment and behaviour.
